Do You Really Save Money or Spend More in Big Bazaar Offers

Its more than 5 years, I am shopping groceries & many other items from Big Bazaar. You can find many tempting offers from Big Bazar on time to time during the whole year. One of their biggest offer comes during republic day & that is known as the Big Bazaar Maha Bachat offer. You can take the advantage of this offer from 23rd January to 27th January.

But do you really save money or spend more during the offers?

Every time, I return from Big Bazaar shopping, I regret myself & promise not to buy anything in future from Big Bazaar.

But I don’t keep this promise for long & I go for Big Bazaar shopping again. First reason is they lure people with their offers through full page advertisement in Indian news paper & another reason is its convenient to shop everything from one place.

But, in spite of shopping again & again from Big Bazaar, I really don’t like to go there, particularly when they bring the offers like ‘Maha Bachat’ during Republic Day.

big bazaar offers

Why don’t I like Big Bazaar offers?

I really want to forget my past experiences in Big Bazaar shopping & wanted to analyze my shopping experience once again during the current Maha Bachat offer.

I want to check whether I can really save some money?

I want to share my real experience during this shopping & looking for your opinions & experiences about this.

So first thing I did is, prepared my list for the items which I wanted to purchase from Big Bazaar.

I hate to prepare the list but its really one of the best thing I have learnt particularly for shopping in Big Bazaar. If you don’t prepare this, you will really buy so many unwanted items from Big bazaar without realizing this.

So here is my experience.

1. Experience on discounts

After reaching there in Big Bazar, I found that more than 70% of the products in my list has no discount. And even in remaining 30%, there was no attractive discounts.

If I would purchase only those items, which were in my list, I would have saved only Rs. 100 from a  bill of Rs. 5000/-.

It was really shocking as I can get that much discounts even from the grocery shop or super market in my area, if I would purchase all these items.

So what ‘Maha Bachat’ or ‘Sabse Saste 5 Din’ they are talking about?

Here is my conclusion on discounts-

  • The big discounts were only on low popular brands, unbranded items or items without any label (like vegetables & fruits, spices, cereals & pulses) etc. The reality is that the price of many of these items are actual price with inflated price on the labels.
  • Many of the branded items either has no discount or these discounts are directly from the company which you can find even in your local grocery shops or general & medical stores.
  • You can get better deals even from some of the other wholesaler shops on many of the products. You can find these shops in every area.
  • And yes, you may find real good discounts on many of the products in Big Bazaar but that is not your need, you create the need.

2. Experience on inconvenience

If you had ever visited the big Bazaar during such offers, you better know what inconvenience, I am talking about. You need to spend at least 1 hour in the queue to enter inside.

There is more inconvenience inside the Big Bazaar, as it’s over crowded. Its very difficult to move your trolley. You spend at least double your time then normal shopping in the same place.

And in the last, you will find inconvenience in the billing counter. Yesterday, I had to wait around 1 hour in the queue for my turn.

3. Experience on expenses

Until you buy lots of things from Big Bazaar, you have to go there either by your 4 wheeler or by rickshaw. And I assume, its not very near to your home.

So you have to spend good amount, either you go by rickshaw or by your 4 wheeler (including parking charges).

There comes another expense, if you don’t carry your plastic bags. They charge Rs. 6 for each bag. If you think to save money by taking only 1 carry bag, then the shopping bag will become so much heavy & you can’t walk with this even for 10 feet distance.

So, its always better to carry good quality bags with you & park your vehicle near the Big bazaar gate.

4. Experience on unwanted items

After reaching home, I matched my bill with my list that I prepared for shopping. I found –

  • there are around 30% items which were not in my list & that cost me around Rs. 1500/-.
  • at least Rs. 250/- were spent on useless items that was really not needed.
  • after checking the bill thoroughly, I realized, I saved just Rs. 374/- out of my Rs. 4986/- bill & if you deduct all the expenses of petrol, car parking, carry bags & the absolutely unwanted item of Rs. 250/-, I saved nothing.

5. Experience on Bill

Although, there was no mistake in my bill but I observed many people on the customer support desk, complaining about the problem in their bills

Although its rare, but you can find 3 types of problems in your bill –

  1. One of the item is missing but it was charged in the bill.
  2. Discount that was mentioned in Big Bazaar was not applied in the bill.
  3. One of the item you did not purchase came in your shopping bag & even charged in your bill.

Conclusion

Here are some of the tips that you can follow if you are planning to go for shopping at Big Bazaar.

  1. Prepare a list of necessary items & strictly stick on that.
  2. Carry some big sized bags with you.
  3. Always check expiry dates. You won’t find any expiry item there but most of the items on sale will be near to expiry. Its better to buy fresh items, close to manufacturing date.
  4. Check your bill on the counter itself for any problem. Its difficult to come back again.
  5. Try to shop online on Bigbazaar.com site if you are from Mumbai & if you are not from Mumbai, you can purchase from FutureBazaar.com. Neither you pay any expenses nor you feel any inconvenience & the most important, you will buy, only what you need. And yes, you can pay them at the time of delivery.

Its my opinion as per my experience. You may have different opinion. Can you share this with me & other people.

Your experience on Big Bazaar is the same which I & many others of this country are facing. They are just fooling people which many of us don’t understand while buying. Their are many items which are outdated but they never replace without the bill. I have learnt many lessons after visiting these Big Bazars & have now cut down my visits just to give some of my expenditure to the poor people who really do better work all day on roads.

      • pratap david says

i am grateful to you for your astute analysis. I have decided not to be fooled by shopping ii Big Bazaar. Alsso i want to point out that they are fooling people by starting a scheme of charging rs1000 and saying that you are allowed to shop for 12000 rupees in return that scheme is also deceptive — Beware customers

  2. Felix says

This is actually a sales gimmic that Big Bazar is using. It is better to go to a Mall nearby or I would request you to visit Reliance Store where everything you get under one roof and also everything is checked by the staff. I have compared the services of Big Bazar, Haiko Mall, D-Mart and also Reliance. I found that except for Big Bazar the other three are much better and the best is Reliance.

  3. Sunil says

    thank so much priya.

first of all i hate this type of bazaars, Big Bazaar is just fooling people that’s it.
priya its 100% true. no saving at all.

  4. Sandeep Baliyan says

I do agree with you Guys, nothing comes free or discounted in Life. If you want good things, you need to pay the price.
I would suggest to go FairPrice or Local Grocessary Shop and you will find the best rate there.

  5. Vivek Ranjan says

Truly agree with you, people are going to big bazaar to save their time, which is more precious than money. They don’t like to go various locations for their needs. They prefer to go to one place where they find all the things and they are saving lot of time. Parking is also a very big issue in metros, this one may be the other reason to go to big bazaar. Money is secondary for who can afford. We can purchase lot of things not only cheaper but more fresh than big bazaar from out side after watching this article. Thanks a lot.

    Absolutely true.

Good you shared this info for the benefit of others.

We always think after visits to mall that we have saved on our bill but the actual fact is far from reality. Its better to do a cross check and analyse before such Bachat trips are taken.

  7. shraboni says

Thanx Priya for sharing your horrible experience. From now I will be aware from these kinds of nonsense bachat schemes.

  8. dinesh singh says

Thanks for inf. you are very true and i have stopped purchasing from Big Loot bazzar from last 06 months and returned my local shop.

  9. neeta says

i have been to big bazaar and its a ok deal as you get free bes and that adjust your expences , but yes the quality of grociries are not good, its good for a expereince

  10. G says

people who visit such Big Bazar sales also purchases items which is not there on buying lis.
Besides, grains such as Basmati rice, they offer One bag free on purchase of one, but you can purchase single bag from grain market for less than that. They generally offer discounts on luxury and new branded products to market them.

  11. Prashant says

Since last 5 year I didn’t went there.
Quality is too low for common man standards if compared to the discount price.
Groceries quality is much higher elsewhere at same cost.

  12. Angela Reegan says

    Priya,

    Such a useful information.

I used to buy many items from Big Bazaar but i didnt notice all this.

I will do check in future.

    Thanks.

  13. Konick says

What ever you say, But we indians love FREE words so much that when ever there is a sale of free offer we check that item first whether necessary or not we try to grab that and show other people that we got this free and make him also buy that but the original product would have cost us including the free which we don’t care the things is we got free is what matters. Few people understand and few don’t. Especially ladies when ever there is free offer they go and check first, or buy it. Indian Mentality, Can’t help it ? Priya next time when you want to buy something you would be there in these bazaars.

  14. Lakshman says

The experience is the same in all the super bazaars. The tricks are
the same.Their strategy is to have a large display, create an urge which is
strongly registered in your mind which will result in your buying atleast the next
time even if you resist this time. They strongly encourage window shopping
because they know you will fall in their trap very shortly. Most of the times you
will be shocked to see something you did not want has been bought. All proven
mind games to create a desire.

Best is to go to a grocers shop around the corner, gossip with that guy about the govt, movies, his family etc.You will make a friend & can get a discount of atleast
15% on the MRP & this includes even a medical shop. They badly want to hold on
to their customers fearing the looming threats of the big guns. All of them have
good margins on MRP & are willing to share it.This is another proven mind game.

  15. Atul says

    Dear Priya,
Products like Pediasure for kids are having good margin with special offer, but that to on 1kg pack. its good to shop few things after analyzing online.

  16. Janardhan says

    Hi Priya,

I agree with you. Your experience was really interesting & helpful. Yesterday I saw full page add given in times, offer was 5kg atta + 5ltrs oil + 5 Kg sugar for Rs.769/-/. I was very excited called my wife to tell her about the offer.

My wife told me you fool 1kg sugar cost 35/-,5 kg atta 165/-, oil 85/- per ltr. what’s the big deal? It make sense to buy from a super market close to our house.

  17. Gaurav Agarwal says

I have very bad experience with BigBazar.I bought some item from BigBazar around 600 Rs Value.at the time of billing suddenly Billing system was crashed and shut down.cashier has been swap my debit Card but till print out was not came out.cashier said your card is nt swapped. unfortunately my mobile also switched off due to that i unable to to check transaction msg so i believed on cashier and returned to home after cancelling the bill due lot of rush, but after coming at home i checked my mobile and found that transaction had been made.i complained this to BB but after so many round of BB i didn’t get my money back.
    tell what should i do.
It is totally lootera no saving
if u want to make u foolish urself then move to BB.

    Thanks

  18. Niranjan says

Yes its true, priya. It so happens that when ever we want some change instead of going to some traditional grocery shop with the list, we wish to go to Big Baazar. When we go there, we would end up buying unwanted (for now) items which we may require sometime later. But even though we don’t save much, somehow it is really surprising how so many thousands of people rush here is really a wonder.

  19. Shaam says

During 2005-2008 , Big bazaar gave real discounts which made me a regular customer but during the last 2-3 years, there is hardly any good discount , customers find there. And what is said above by other readers is true

  20. Ramalingam.V.S. says

Priya, I agree to your view points. After reaching home only I have felt I need not have purchased those things which I would not have purchased had not there been an offer.

    with regards,

    ramalingam.

  21. g venugopal pillai says

    dear priya madam,

thanks for your mail. it is very advisable to all mumbaikers before jumping to any free OFFERS!!!
    Thanks again.

  22. rajaram says

Yes Priya, You are absolutely right. I never enter into these big bazars, because I know they are only
luring the people. It is not for middle class people like us.

    rajaram

  23. Priya says

    hi priya,

Yes, what u r saying is right, the discount & all are making people fool. Your suggestion & experience will help people about this type of discount.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Chandrashekhar.G

  24. mapari sajid says

Thanks a lot, i will never visit all such cheat bazaar again and strictly ask all my circle total ban .
Secondly it will be better if we find some other option. Also be careful before investing money all their fineprints are never readable, we only get shock when we surrender, we all get not even what we invested after long years, and in hand are only false promises committed by all the branded firms before investing.

  25. wasim says

yes its very true that buying at Big bazaar or any other super store we end up picking up extra items not on our shopping list from day 1 these stores have opened it has been very difficult to maintain the monthly budget, well as for my exp i am an wholesale dealer in fresh fruits and also have close proximity to the whole market in Navi Mumbai so i have been buying from there which has reduced my monthly bills.. yes i know it is not convenient for every house hold to come and buy from the whole sale mkt but still it is convenient for people near by… Dmart at koperkhairne is just a stone throw away from the place i reside and i usually go to check the price which i found to be higher specially the vegetables yes there are discount on some but those are just for unwanted items that add to our bill .. for me its convenient to buy grocery from the whole mkt its much cheap and the quality is better…. any one wanting any help in buying from the wholesale can write to me wmqr.786@gmail.com ………

  26. deepti says

I have same experience as u but no body is ready to talk about it and the quality for unbranded product is very low .In fact u can get some branded product at wholeseller at 10% discount

  27. Sushanta Chowdhury says

Thank you Priya, I do not go to Big Bazar.Nor do I have any intention to go there in near future.
    thank you again.

  28. brahman says

Yes Priya, you are absolutely right. many of use refuse to share our blunders at such places, which would have been beneficial to many others. Marketing gimmcs adopted by Big Bazaar etc. are mainly to dispose off near expiry products, which would have been a lose to the company otherwise. Other items are unbranded ones, the quality of which is anybody’s guss, the manufacturers offer heavy discount to promote it. you will be tempted to buy unwanted items or quanitity in excess, for disposing off in dust bin after some time. This being my experience, I stop shopping during such maha bachat days or where the offer is there, unless I am convinced with my need and quality of products. Instead of believing your eyes, be sensible in such situations.

  29. anil kumar says

    Hi, Neha N
thank u for this information. since last one year i am telling these things to the people about the big bazar but and upto certain extent i am successful. since last one year i did not visited b/bazar. some of the reasons are given below.
1.low quality items. 2. no brand item is available. 3. if any brand item is avaible than there is no discount on thet items. whereas same branded item can be purchase from original brand shop with some discount. 4. it seems to have polished cloth items. becoz after certain wash the shining goes off, so what is the use to purchase costly items.5 lot of time consumed to go there, seached the required item and than off course at the billing counters. 6. and suppose u want to exchange it than it procedure so lengthy that u will not try to exchange next time rather u would like the adjust with that item only.
    some suggestion is that
grocery item purchase from nearby shop only and definetly he will take care off u and he will give u discount as well as on debit also it u run short of money.
for clothe u should go to some branded shop only for costly items otherwise u can go any good and reputed cloth shop and will get quality cloth as compare to big bazar.
so follow these two tips for day, rest i will keep on telling about the marketing experience.
BIG PROBLEM IS that we do not discuss with other friend and we do not tell the truth about many small things , because we feel shame on these small thing. where as still if we save one rupees means we have earn one rupee.
i appreciate to u for bringing these experience on site and now u see how many suggestion and experences are coming on line. thank u .
    regards
    anil

100% true also in big bazzar many good brands are not kept, those local what they make through there in house they offer discount, because without discount no one will buy this unbranded products, we are 100% fooled

  32. MOHAMMED ARIF SIDDIQUI says

BIG BAZAAR MANAGEMENT ARE VERY CUNNING AND EXPERT IN READING HUMAN PSYCHOLOGY.THEY ARE PLAYING WITH THE TEMPTATION FEELING OF A HUMAN BEING. THEY ARE OFFERING DISCOUNT ON SOME ITEMS AND CHARGING HIGH PRICES ON OTHER ITEMS. AT THE CONCLUSION THEY ARE THE BENEFICIARIES NOT WE.

  33. Dr Chandrashekhar Lele says

    Dear Dear Priya,,
ar PriyMany thanks. The only beneficial scheme is only when they offer you to buy old news Papers called as raddi and take a few things from them.

  35. T.srinivasa says

    Yes Priya,
I fully endorse your views on all these Big Discount Schemes periodically introduced by this type of Malls. I am a firm believer that NO ONE sells to benefit others more than his own and BB cant be an exception to this business principle. In fact it always intended to clear the NEAR EXPIRY items as a package so that offering discount is more advantageous to the Mall then to discard the item after the expiry date. BUYER BEWARE is the message one has to carry with him when he enters this type of MALLS.Regds. TS

Thanks for share your experience. People need that type of help who have knowledge and share their opinion. I like if anybody have knowledge and experience and share for people awareness! Actually i am not live in India but i love my country India. Thanks.

  37. Phani says

    Dear Priya,

You are telling is true. But I checked for some of the items which are useful to house hold, i.e., they are giving atta, Sugar & Oils and one more item for childrens dipers and surf powders. only these items are useful ad remaining items are not getting discount for us. I checked this twice while shopping in BIG Bazar. but the complete beneficiaries are the Big Bazr only not we.

  38. Nihanth says

They will charge every penny and do business for the sake of themselves. Not for the sake of people. Maha Bachat can be related to Maha trap and we fall as a prey. Business is for the sake of profits and nobody cares about customers only some people some times do as a passion.

  39. Mahesh Chheda says

    Hi Priya,

Thanks for information, really it’s worthy.

    Dear All,

Best way to get discount is to buy things in lot – wholesae for regular items like wheat, rice, oil, Ghee, spices, different types of Dals and any other thing which can be stored for 6 months and above.

If you do this then you will save round 5,000 to 10,000 on 6 months or yearly basis depending upon no of members in ones family.

Also you will get good quality from whole sale market.
There will also not be queue for entering store, billing, while purchasing.
Also if you make good rapport with wholesaler he can also give you discounts, EMI type facility.

Just try this and you will feel the difference.

    Regards,
    Mahesh

stop all your nonsense commands, its their business tricks to attract people, if u r so clever regret those offers, are they coming to your home and selling those things? definitely not, you are the guys to go their for a shopping. now in india almost 60% of the people are educated so its our own knowledge which responsible for the mistakes. think and act before every act and don’t be always shake your heads and support for others commands…

  41. K.Usha says

Priya u are right but the free sentiment drives us to go behind these offer and we tend to spend more on unnecessary stuff every time , waste of time , unpopular brand , money
but we also think we will stop but we are taken away by these free material adv.

  42. Dr Sudheendra Rao LN says

dear priya, thanks a lot for your kind information. i think you are creating awareness among the people. how grate you are? concerned about people. u r an extraordinary person. grate. my support is with you always. thnaks a lot once again.

  43. khaja sheriff says

plz buy the all things near by house . why giving all the money to one person. also support roadside small nd poor vendors . also encourage very small businessmen.

  44. haridas says

    Dear All,

On the earth nobody will do any work without profit
There is no personal intimacy as a customer while u are in malls , where as in a individual shop /veg vendor u are recoginised /noticed by him.
Very important thing weight of things In individual shops they are not so particular for 5 to 10 grams but in malls even one gram is taken into account and u have to shed down the money Think in case of vegi/fruits if u get one or two bad pieces in the lot u have to pay the money in case of malls but in individual he might already given some one or two extra pieces
For these reasons only outsiders want to establish here -nothing but EAST INDIA COMPANY-
Indians should voluntrialy BAN Mall shoping concept

  45. ksunder says

    Thank you very much Priya,
Yes, what u r saying is right, the discount & all are making people fool. Your suggestion & experience will help people about this type of discount.

  46. anirudha says

    yes priya,

u r absolute right after all these people were come to make money, so we should be careful while entering in such malls,

    regards,
    anirudha

  47. Lidwin says

You r absolutely right Priya.I had the same experience last time, hence this time i did not even glance at their add published in the newspaper.

  48. gayathri says

    Priya,
the mail you sent was really useful. Everybody should think thrice, before entering into such malls. they have so many business tactics to cheat the customers. we should be daring enough to question them in such cases.

  49. Angel says

Beware its not only the big bazars or Reliance or D marts,, every other big discount shops for electronics, clothes etc….does the same thing. Nothing comes freebie as every business man is here to make profits and no one will do a charity….so its upto us to do prudent shopping and buy what we really need and from the right places….even when u start buying regularly from the same shop he takes u for a ride later as you would have built some trust and would not check out the latest prices at different shops….so one should always check prices in 2 to 3 shops and then buy from the right place…………..
